After 6 years, Tamil Nadu has hiked bus fares of government corporation buses. The lowest fare of Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses in Chennai has been rise from Rs.3 to Rs.5, and the highest price from Rs.14 to Rs.23. While incase of non-metros, tickets would vary from Rs.3 to Rs.19. For mofussil bus services, the fare has been hiked by closely a third, as per release from the state transport dept. on Friday evening.
The government told the fares have been rised because of the increase in the fuel prices (by almost fifty percent in 6 years) and spare besides management and rise in the salaries of workers of the different debt-ridden state transport corporations.
With over 75% govt. buses being over-aged, corporations challenged losses to the tune of rupees nine crore on a daily basis and subsidy given to compensate the extra cost was not enough, the government told in the release.
In each district this govt. has expended crores of rupees in the name of MGR’s 100 years celebration.
“To balance this, the bus fare has been modified with instant effect,” told the release vide a move from the Madras high court suggesting the same.
