The Metropolitan Transportation Corporation has eliminiated nearly 250 to 300 long-distance bus route services from its fleet and reshaped them into short-route buses. The initiation, although made as an try to serve to extra passengers by MTC authorities, comes as a bad surprise to commuters who were already angry on the big bus fare hike, who have tod that they have missed the straight link to several parts of the city.

Specifically, people of Neelankarai, Ambattur, Tambaram, Sholinganallur, Injampakkam, Avadi, Thirumullaivayil, Maduravayol, Vandalur, Padi, Perungalathur and Pallavaram are the badly affected now they should take 2 to 3 buses to reach the other part of city.

The converted short route from long routes buses in Chennai city comprises 70A Avadi-Vandalur, 91 Sholinganallur-Tambaram west, 114 Red Hills to Tambaram, 111 Thiruverkadu – Tambaram, 170 Kolathur- Tambaram and 95 Thiruvanmiyur to Tambaram (95).

Each route has about twelve to fourteen buses functioned on alternate sides. Whereas on some routes, 2 long-distance buses have remained, on few, long-distance buses have been taken and modified into short routes.

The residents of Avadi, Thirumullaivayil, Ambattur & Padi have to trust on bus services to head to Tambaram and few neighbourhood regions in southern suburbs, as there seems no direct train service. However, some elderly commuters travel via Chennai Central and Park and travel by EMU trains.

MTC has the present fleet capacity of 3,200 buses picking 48 lakh population in Chennai city and places of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. The buses are run on 833 routes from thirty three depots. An MTC bus is ran for close to 260 km carrying 1,200 commuters per day.

The recent conversion is to increase the number of ordinary bus or white board bus so that the passengers can pay only the ordinary bus fare. MTC serves about twenty-seven percent of transport demand of chennai city.

The city needs around 2000 buses to serve to the extra transport lack. It is computed that 1.5 – 2 lakh bus travellers have migrated to differnt types of transport in the last 3 years.
